| ||General comments:||Although I drove Mazdas through the latter half of the '90s, I figured I'd get a new 2001 Grand Caravan, since they were accompanied by so much hype, plus I also felt a slight obligation to go back to owning a vehicle made in my home town!Well, I bought this van in March of 2001. I was very impressed by the solid feel, smooth engine, superb handling, and a nice smooth ride, that is until 4100 kilometers. That was when I was driving through Michigan en route to Northern Ontario on a family vacation, when the air conditioner suddenly started blowing warm air, the cruise control when engaged sounded like a woodchipper, causing the entire vehicle to vibrate and not maintain consistent speed, followed by the engine having a permanent metallic clanging. Try calming down your senior citizen passengers during all of that! I called roadside assistance to no avail. All I was able to get from them was the phone number of a dealer in Sault Ste. Marie another 3.5 hours away. My original dealer simply told me to drive the vehicle without the air and cruise. That did not stop the incessant engine clanging. Unfortunately the dealer in the Sault had a full service dept., and could not tend to my vehicle in due time. They also could not coordinate a loaner or rental with my dealer in Windsor. I returned to Windsor on May 28 and made an appointment to meet with the service advisor at my dealership. I requested a refund, which was not possible in any way shape or form. Daimler Chrysler customer service could provide no assistance in the matter. The vehicle was brought in for service May 28. Repotedly it was a faulty compressor. I am writing this on June 7. My 2001 Grand Caravan is still not fixed. I requested a Grand Caravan loaner, since that is what I bought and require. The dealership advised me that thay cannot give me a minivan loaner.Other than all that, the vehicle has been wonderful. However, because of the whole debacle I have no desire to drive that vehicle again.|
| ||What things have gone wrong with the car:||Poor mechanical quality and reliabilityUnacceptable service|
| ||Previous car:||The 1986 Plymouth Voyager - bought new - Excellent. My '92 Voyager - bought new - was a mechanical disaster. This 2001 Grand Caravan started having problem too early (4100 kms) - not a good sign.|
